Meet Markiesha

Clinical Therapist/Owner

Markiesha Johnson, LMSW-C is a Detroit Native who is passionate about helping others become the best version of themselves. Markiesha is the founder and owner of Restorative Minds Counseling, PLLC. Markiesha obtained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University in 2009. Upon graduating with her B.A. in Criminal Justice, Markiesha began her career as a youth counselor in a residential treatment facility for abused, neglected, and delinquent girls. After gaining valuable experience in the Criminal Justice field, Markiesha began a new career journey in 2011 at the State of Michigan with The Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Markiesha began her career with MDHHS as a Foster Care Specialist, then promoted to Foster Care Services Program Manager. She has over 10 years of experience working with diverse populations within the child welfare system and the social work field. Markiesha understood that many of her clients suffered from mental health and trauma. Given her own personal experiences and family dynamics, Markiesha became passionate about breaking generational trauma.

After being gainfully employed and obtaining valuable work experience, Markiesha enrolled in Graduate School at MSU to obtain her master’s degree in Clinical Social Work. Markiesha interned at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak in their award-winning Parenting Program where she supported first time mother’s, mothers who experienced Post-Partum Depression, and she facilitated a Single Mom’s Parenting Group. In addition, Markiesha worked in maternal infant health where she provided services for moms and babies with the goal of reducing the maternal mortality rate amongst women of color. Despite the sudden unexpected loss of her father in 2018, Markiesha graduated with her MSW Clinical Degree in 2019 with a 3.9 cumulative GPA.

Shortly after graduation, Markiesha began working as a clinical therapist, treating individuals who were suffering with their mental health. Given her own life transitions with the birth of a new baby and the death of her father, Markiesha benefited from therapeutic services to help her cope with life’s challenges. As someone who has been on both sides of the table, Markiesha provides a unique perspective. Markiesha is compassionate, empathetic, and dedicated to helping as many individuals as she can on their therapeutic journey. Markiesha obtained a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the Workplace certificate from University of South Florida Office of Corporate Training and Professional Education. In the African American culture, there has always been such a negative stigma associated with mental health. Markiesha strives to help break that negative stigma and works diligently to normalize mental health in marginalized communities.

Thank you for taking the first step in this journey of self-discovery and healing. Markiesha looks forward to helping you achieve your treatment goals through self-determination and commitment.
